In Swedish, each noun has either an "en" gender or an "ett" gender, formally referred to as utrum and neutrum. The gender determines how each noun is written in its definite and indefinite form, as well as singular and plural versions of the noun. Unfortunately, there is no rule for telling which gender a word belongs to, so you have to memorize this for every single noun. But don't be discouraged. Daily Swedish makes learning en or ett both easy and fun.
